TYPO3 4.2 is here.

Today is a great day for a release !

We got a new box !

More than a year after 4.1, the TYPO3 Association release version 4.2 of our beloved CMS. Think about this : 500 bugs and features. Read again, more than 500 so it’s more than one commit a day. Enough to keep the doctor away I would say.

So does this mean TYPO3 was flawed and buggy? Absolutely no. Bugs, yeah like in any product of that size. The site Ohloh says TYPO3 is 2.7 millions lines if you add Trunk, typo3xdev and 5.0 work. How can you expect this much code to be error free ?

While at Ohloh (http://www.ohloh.net/projects/58) you can evaluate the work done so far. Here’s the scoop: 43 millions dollars. About 5 Euros ;)

So if you want to get a fast feature review go read the excellent Release notes from Thomas Esders at http://typo3.org/development/articles/release-notes-42.

There are a lot of obvious new good stuff but also some more hidden ones.

My personal smaller favourites are:

  • The new “Start in module” which give you the possibility to get directly to pagetree (Web-> Page) instead of the boring “About modules” from the past.
  • The capacity to replace any BE label using TS instead of playing with LLXML and risking overwriting a file.
  • Lots of new icons. Still not perfect but we must keep some work for 4.3…
  • The disappearing of icons for the main modules (Web, Files, User Tools, etc).
  • The disappearing of Doc Module that no one knew what it was…  ;)

Regarding the last one, there’s a new uninstalled sysext for this that use the new BE: opendocs. This one is a “shy” extension so remember to check the box in EM to see it.

What are you waiting for ? Go get your package : http://typo3.org/download/packages/

And with some smaller glitches an update is rather simple compared to earlier version jumps.

Indeed TYPO3 4.2 does a lot of nice things to the backend, but in my experience there are some bugs that should have been fixed before release.

The default behaviour of 4.2 is to encrypt feuser passwords when they are created in the backend. The default behaviour of the felogin extension (former newloginbox) is to handle unencrypted passwords. This inconsistency will probably give rise to a lot of frustration. I installed the md5 extension by Bernard Kraft to handle the problem, but I still haven't managed to create a feuser in the backend and have that user login in the frontend. I cannot seem to solve the password inconsistencies.

Apart from that I'm not able to save any changes to my templates in the template module. This is only a problem in Internet Explorer, but since that's my default browser, it's quite annoying. I'm forced to use the list module.

In short, 4.2 is great in many ways, but I wouldn't recommend it as it is now, with the feuser problems.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

A seemingly blind mand, requesting people to open their eyes, interesting.

Don't take this 'Light in the dark' seriously when he starts a blog like this on April Fools Day :-)
