Controlling Comment Spam for Modern Guestbook

Category: Ron Hall

By: Ron Hall

Well, I guess I have arrived as a blogger. Comment spam is becoming a problem. And as flattering as it is to be considered worthy of spamming, I really do not have time to rush into the TYPO3 backend to delete every bogus entry.

Fortunately, I located an extension that squashes spam for me. Akismet for ve_guestbook (mf_akismet) has proved to be very effective for me. It protects Modern Guestbook (ve_guestbook) which is what the TIMTAB blog extension uses for comments.

It is based on the Askimet spam service from Wordpress and requires that you get a WordPress API key (free). It is currently in a beta state and has no manual. But I had no trouble installing and it works great.

Thanks to Michael Feinbier for providing this extension.

Hey Ron, we actually use this extension fo buzz, too! unfortunately it sometimes seems to hang and still lets too much spam through at some times. Just yesterday evening I deleted 55000+ spam comments, about 7000 undetected messages left...
What I noticed is that spamers use old posts, therefore I'm going to write an extension which automatically closes comments after a given time. Hope this will help...

Thanks, Ingo. It was actually from buzz that I first found out about Akismet. I noticed that buzz was doing a good job of blocking spam. I then noticed "Askimet" labeled on a couple of the fields in the backend and was able to figure out which extension was used from that.

You are right that spammers have a tendency to pick up on old posts. Closing comments after a period of time is a good idea.

Also, thank you for all your work, particularly supplying TIMTAB.

Sorry, comments are closed for this post.
