Project Phoenix: Designers wanted!
You are a designer and want to shape the next-generation look and feel of TYPO3? Then read on!
Currently, the TYPO3 5.0 (Codename: Phoenix) Team consists of six people who plan the architecture, create the concepts and write the code. You can check the development site to see what is going on.
Besides the concepts and code quality, it is equally important to make sure our new codebase still feels like our favourite CMS! That's why our development website, the unit test runner, and the online documentation need to be revisited and redesigned.
If you want to have a lot of freedom (nobody will say you "how to do it" or "what to do exactly"), fix design issues where you see them and want to make sure the TYPO3 community feels at home in the 5.0 project, then just drop me a line!

Is there anyone in charge of interaction design?
One thing I would love to see is a nice flexible and consistent API for BE/FE interaction, allowing developers to move away from the straightforward 'page' and 'record' concept to something a bit more friendly to interact with. The move towards AJAX-enabling the BE is a wonderful start.
What would be incredible is a BE that is context-friendly - instead of 3 static columns of data filling my screen with dozens of 'clickables,' a more conservative and simple design that moves less-used elements out of the way and gives room for the 20% of most-used functionality.
A good example is the page/list dilemma. Typo3 tells me "The current page is of the type "Sysfolder". Sysfolders usually don't contain content elements but are used for collecting other types of records in a single folder" - It is a unhelpful result compared with taking me to the list view.
