TYPO3 Transition Days and the community

One week has passed since the end of the TYPO3 Transition Days - and exciting things are happening!

Directly after the T3CON08 in Berlin, 22 developers from the TYPO3 v4 and TYPO3 v5 core team met for one week of concentrated planning and discussion about the future of TYPO3 (you might have read the news). To me, it was a great event, and the feeling that we can really reach lots of things still thrills me more than ever before.

We quickly saw that both v4 and v5 development has a lot in common and we often face the same challenges - that's why we decided to unite the v4 and v5 core teams, a change already reflected on typo3.org. I think everybody at the transition days felt the same: That we can solve lots of problems if we share a common vision.

On the development front, the general strategy we agreed upon was that big v4 projects should "point into the direction of v5" - meaning three things:

• Either, things are developed for v4, but in a way which makes porting them to v5 easy (An example here is the really cool FE editing by Jeff)
• Big concepts introduced in v4 (like MVC, ...) will have many similarities with the FLOW3 MVC framework, which makes porting extensions lateron easier.
• New developments for v5 which are needed in v4 as well will be backported (an example is the new Templating Engine, where we currently discuss the concepts.)

So, you see, there is a lot of knowledge sharing between v4 and v5!

I'm currently spending a lot of time thinking about the templating engine, and I have been talking to many people in the community about it - so to me, it really feels like community spirit these days!
